Auld Lang Syne…. should old acquaintances be forgot and never brought to mind … We hear the familiar refrain every New Years Eve. What the heck does it mean ? Have you ever stopped to wonder what on earth Auld Lang Syne means ? It basically means "for the sake of old times"…literally, word for word, translating from Scottish to "old long since". It is a poem penned in 1788 by Robert Burns. I wonder if he ever envisioned Guy Lombardo putting the words to music and turning it into an annual classic ? I wonder if he ever envisoned the musical score to sound like a melancholy state of mild drunkenness ? As poignant as the song is, with its melancholy melody, you've got to admit, if played out of key it can sound like
many people feel on New Years Eve. Happy New Year, and make sure you stay safe if planning on singing out of key !
