Now that we're 2 days deep into January… we have the long leagues of winter ahead of us before spring. Most people would have liked some snow for Christmas, but it was not meant to be. Maybe next year. Snow is no stranger here in the mountains of western North Carolina. A few inches from time to time if you are cozy by the fire on a weekend morning is fine with
me…especially if I have good "breakfast fixin's". More than such a cozy excuse to stay inside however and I can do nicely without snow. Not to bore you with tales of where I grew up… but I was about 12 years old in 1978 when the Blizzard of 1978 hit Boston in early February. We received 55 inches in 3 days. That’s four and a half feet. What most folks forget is we had
received about 2 feet in another storm just a few weeks prior, so the snowbanks were doubly high. Ive seen some big bad snowstorms in the years since, but none have ever quite measured up to 1978. Thank Goodness for that. One last note from my memories that year: I remember my Dad made it from our house 18 miles to Boston and back again during the height of the storm in a rear wheel drive 1974 Plymouth Valiant with no snow tires and no chains. Slow and steady wins the race.
