Everybody shout out a big Happy Birthday to my brother Gary who is in town this weekend, travelling to Asheville to celebrate his 60th birthday. I remember when Gary was 18 or 19, and I was just a little guy. He was the greatest big brother you could hope for, and I do mean big at 6 foot 6. He had a 1963 Volkswagen beetle and he would give me rides around the neighborhood. I can still picture and even smell that car today, just like it was yesterday. I wish it were yesterday in many ways, that we were young again and that the shade trees of our yard were splintering the sunlight with Mom and Dad and our other brother all at home. Alas, to go back where you cannot. I saw a great movie once called The Straight Story, starring Sissy Spacek and the late Richard Farnsworth. It's one of my favorite movies of all time. Farnsworth plays an old man named Alvin Straight who drives his lawnmower across 3 states to visit his brother because he has no other way.
