Do you know anyone who has obsessive - compulsive disorder ? I do. Me. At least to a degree, although some in my life might argue I possess the peculiar tendency to a great degree. It doesn’t disprupt my life, in fact I find it to be a humorous aside to day to day operations, if you will. While psychiatrists and psychologists surely have a better understanding of how and why the brain effects a short circuit, or whether we weren't held enough as a child, my understanding is rather basic. If you have OCD as its called, you apparently fall into one of two groups: counters or checkers. Counters obviously have a need to count things. Checkers obviously have a need to check things. I'm a checker. What do I check ? Locks and clocks primarily. To wake up in the wee small hours of the day to host The Morning report on WWNC, I set 4 alarms. 2 electric, one mechanical wind up and my cellphone. Yes, its an example of excessive redundancy. I check the electric digital plug in clocks so many times in the hours before bedtime that the device or devices usually have a shelf life of less than a year. I slide the little button back and forth repeatedly to make sure its set, and it eventually wears out. Same thing with locks. Door locks, car door locks, you name it. They need to be checked several times. Sometimes the metal wears out. Yup. That’s why its called a disorder. Sooner or later my brain realized that the door is locked or the clock is properly set, and I go on my way no worse for wear. It's kind of funny actually. Im easily amused.
