Its that time of year again. Time to get your flu shot. Your annual vaccination against the infulenza virus. A lot of people say they have the flu when they are sick, perhaps suffering a less injurious virus, or just a common cold. If you have ever had infulenza, there is no mistaking it. You feel fine one minute and within hours you have a fever of 102 or 103. That’s called rapid onset high fever. You feel cold, your body aches, your head aches and there are times, if its bad enough, you think you are going to die. That’s real influenza. It can kill children and the elderly. It’s a serious illness. So… get a flu shot. Check first with your doctor, but get a flu shot. Too many people remain under the misconception that they will get the flu from the vaccination. No. The flu shot is an intramuscular injection of inert virus. A virus is a living thing. An inert virus is dead. It cannot infect. Repeat, cannot. Your body however basically recognizes all the little dead viruses floating around in your system and produce antibodies. Next time the antibodies see the same virus, perhaps a live one, they can combat it. So.. check with your doctor and get your flu shot to save yourself the misery. I remember the last time I had true influenza. Dec 31 1999. The eve of the milennium. I was working 44 stories above Times Sq in New York on New Years Eve and I could not leave the building. It was a rough night. That was the last year I ever failed to get a flu shot.
