By the end of Wednesday night it started to feel like I was mugging dead people, so I shut down the Twitter machine and watched the post-debate coverage on MSNBC, CNN and FOX.

Remember all the pre-debate chatter about how Mitt Romney was working on some "zingers" to lay on the President? Can a zinger last 90 minutes?
Most of the talking heads agreed that Romney beat Barack Obama in the debate.
Among the excuses I heard after the President's poor performance:
- Mitt Romney was preparing for much longer (maybe there's a lesson there?)
- The fact checkers will prove Romney a liar today (which doesn't change the debate results one bit)
- The PBS moderator, Jim Lehrer, should have managed the debate better (blaming the moderator for a poor debate performance is like blaming polling for poor campaign performances)
- Al Gore even suggested that the President's flight Wednesday afternoon put him at an altitude that scrambled his brain a bit. Seriously?
From posture to facial expressions, command of the data and likability, the President seemed to fall short.
So, what went wrong? Why did the debate turn out so badly for the President? Do you think it will have any lasting impact on the race?
