Just in case the message wasn't clear after Governor Chris Christie took a few long walks on the beach with President Obama, the Republican from New Jersey is very, very, very, very willing to attack his own party when it's politically profitable... er... I mean... when the GOP does something bad.
He's the modern-day John McCain -- being all mavericky and such.
The latest example: the Republican House leadership delayed a vote on a Hurricane Sandy relief package.
Allahpundit over at the Hot Air blog points out:
Do note that the video below comes from his own press team. And not only are they circulating the full clip, they’re sending around a smaller clip in which he dumps on Congress just to make sure no one misses the political point of all this.
Here's the Jersey Shore icon in full:
What's disturbing about this is that Gov. Christie has built a political reputation on his willingness to "tell it like it is." Yet, here he is ignoring the fact that this "relief package" got larded up with spending un-related to Sandy.
So much for "straight talk."
The pork-barrel feast includes more than $8 million to buy cars and equipment for the Homeland Security and Justice departments. It also includes a whopping $150 million for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to dole out to fisheries in Alaska and $2 million for the Smithsonian Institution to repair museum roofs in DC.
An eye-popping $13 billion would go to “mitigation” projects to prepare for future storms.
Other big-ticket items in the bill include $207 million for the VA Manhattan Medical Center; $41 million to fix up eight military bases along the storm’s path, including Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; $4 million for repairs at Kennedy Space Center in Florida; $3.3 million for the Plum Island Animal Disease Center and $1.1 million to repair national cemeteries.Budget watchdogs have dubbed the 94-page emergency-spending bill “Sandy Scam.”
I can't believe I'm about to say this but....
The voice of sanity in this is actually NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who said: "You would think they’d want to ask questions before they give away the public’s money."
