A personal insult by an anonymous WNC Twitterer named @WNCGOP prompts a story from a TV reporter in Charlotte. State Republican officials are asked whether they approve of these tactics.
That story gets picked up in local media and regurgitated all over the state by progressives, Democrats and media outlets (but I repeat myself).
However, harassment by a self-described Democratic candidate recruitment team is ignored, as it targets conservative bloggers in the closing days of the legislative session.
It seems the very TV reporter so interested in a personal attack against Democratic Rep. Susan Fisher, had no interest in the story when the party affiliations are reversed.
In fact, no media outlet in the state seems to care about the tactics of this group of Democrats calling themselves Moving NC Forward.
One of the people associated with this Democratic candidate recruitment group is Jeanne Bonds – a former city elected official from Knightdale, failed candidate for state office, and host of a radio show in Raleigh. She's also a regular contributor to NC Spin, as well as the Time Warner News 14 cable show Capitol Tonight. (Full disclosure, before I started at WWNC, I was a reporter for News 14 Carolina.)
So far I’ve not seen any stories asking whether NC Spin, Capitol Tonight, or any other media outlet that relies on her for analysis whether they endorse the kind of behavior in which Moving NC Forward engages.
Past is prologue
As outlined in a previous debate, the team of Democrats running the Moving NC Forward account uses personal attacks, gay-baiting, false accusations, and "spamming" to attack people with whom they disagree.
They also use the mentally challenged as punchlines to their immature insults.
But they’re Democrats, so no need to ask the NC Democratic Party to condemn the group. That’s not newsworthy. Definitely not like a guy in Asheville calling Rep. Fisher a name.
This anonymous team focuses a lot of attention to spamming Twitter feeds where people discuss NC legislative and political issues. And, like a group of 5th grade bullies with parents that don’t love them enough, these partisan hacks deem people who disagree as trolls.
And, once labeled as trolls and “RWNJs” (right-wing nut jobs), the group and its followers feel free to malign and lie.
These are the tactics.
The strategy is Alinsky Rule #5: "Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon."
But the main point is to shut down all opposition. To clear the field.
Andrew Klavan described the strategy in this YouTube video from four years ago. He called it – Shut Up.
“Even if the Left can’t turn Shut Up into law, they’ve worked hard over the years to make it the custom of the country," Klavan says. "It’s the essence of politically correct phraseology and university speech codes. ‘Say it our way or shut up.’”
And when a certain affable and liberty-loving radio host in Asheville talks about the WNCGOP tweet insulting Rep. Fisher, well… “Shut up.”
It doesn’t matter what he says (he criticized it).
It only matters that he shut up.
Moving us somewhere
They call it "doxing" nowadays.
You would think a bunch of anonymous politicos who cry about being stalked and spammed by conservative "trolls" would understand the concern that two conservative women might have about being named publicly by an organization that foments attacks against political opponents.
If you’ve never actually been stalked, you might not be able to relate.
And if you HAVE actually been stalked, you would certainly understand the implied threat of “outing” someone to a few hundred outraged Leftists.
By the way, one of the bloggers says the woman that Moving NC Forward identified as Lady Liberty was not, in fact, Lady Liberty. So, they might have "outed" the wrong woman. I'm sure she'll be happy to hear why her name and information is now tied to a political fight in which she had no part.
But this isn’t as newsworthy as a guy in Asheville tweeting an insult to Rep. Fisher. No need for a Charlotte TV reporter to look into it.
Doxing your opponents
The blogger Sister Toldjah explained how things developed between her and Jeanne Bonds with the Moving NC Forward group:
Sister Toldjah then tweeted the following story, which I've compiled into an easier-to-read format:
Jeanne Bonds, who I'll refer to as
#JB4NC, is the ringleader behind the doxing efforts. It started w/ me, but hasnt ended with me.
#JB4NC is active there.
When she's not doxing or sniping at people who dare to argue with her, she's quite good at info sharing.
#JB4NC is influential in #NCPOL #NCGA biz. Active on social media. As I am active as well but on the opposite side, it was like oil/water. We had a very heated, ugly battle over something - don't even remember what now. A couple of days later, I reached out to her and asked if we could either Direct Message (DM) or email. I had had enough of the bickering.
She accepted my olive branch to communicate privately. In DM, I told her we needed to stop, what we were doing. It wasn't helping the citizens of this state that we both love with the bickering, & she agreed.
One of #JB4NC's snipes at me during our initial battle was that I don't use my real name. I explained why: Job & family concerns. Safety/finance.
#JB4NC understood, said she shouldn't have gone after my using an anonymous name in this toxic climate, & said she, too, had stalkers.
Pleased that we seemingly had bonded over this matter, & that she seemingly understood, I shared w/ #JB4NC my first name. I told #JB4NC we had a mutual friend, that she could talk to him about how "real" a person I am, that they could verify my credentials.
I told her this human being to human being - I wanted to move past bickering. I wanted her to know that I wasn't a bot, and that my photo is real.
From that conversation, we had reached what I thought was a turning point. That the next time we disagreed, it wouldn't be a slugfest. That the next time one of us had an issue with the other, we'd hash it out privately over DM to clear misunderstandings up.
But a few weeks later, she publicly, viciously, & falsely accused me of "attacking a child" on social media. Another slugfest ensued.
Since that time, her sock puppet account @MovingNCForward has been used as her base for trying to "out" me as "punishment."
#MNCF claims to be a "recruiter of Democratic candidates for state office" but for the last two weeks it's been all Sister Toldjah, all the time.
It's not just garden variety of criticism, which I'm used to. It's the attempted "exposing" via "outing" by any means necessary.
Remember my first name that I gave Jeanne Bonds in confidence? The one she understood why I didn't use due to the toxic climate?
She has used #MNCF as her base for trying to determine if I'm really a woman, if I work for Art Pope, if I am a GOP operative, etc. It's been going on non-stop.
Even worse is she's gone after allies of mine, & "outed" someone she thought was @LadyLiberty1885, but isn't.
She & her minions - along w/ Occupy Raleigh, "doxed" a person NOT INVOLVED IN THIS AT ALL, publishing PERSONAL INFO. This is how depraved these people are. It's NOT about wanting an anonymous blogger to "stand by what they say" - it is to destroy personally. This is ALWAYS why I have shied away from using my real name. It has NEVER been about not wanting to stand behind what I say.
This is about silencing - not real names.
To show you: #MNCF/#JB4NC are now targeting radio host Pete Kaliner, making FCC CALL THREATS. He's gotten on #JB4NC's bad side & he, too, must be silenced.
Something interesting happened today, however. I continued to hammer this, & this afternoon, #JB4NC urged her people to move on. Sorta.
In pretending to have the "moral high ground", #JB4NC told her people to "stay focused on the issues." Where has she been for two weeks?
Two weeks of vicious attacks, threats on ANYONE who disagrees with her. But now it's "focus on the issues"? The joke is on you, honey.
She's told her people to back off because she doesn't want me to expose her involvement any more than I have already. It's embarrassing.
#JB4NC's star is rising due to the unfortunate national attention NC has received. That's great, but she won't do it by stepping on MY back. My mistake? Assuming she was a woman of her word when I told her things in confidence. Her mistake? Assuming I wouldn't fight back.
In closing, I will continue this exposure until the vicious harassment stops. Or legal channels may be necessary. Who knows? When my real name does get out, a WHOLE LOT of people will be disappointed to learn I'm a plain Jane w/ no official party ties :)
So, do any of the people behind the Moving NC Forward account care? Not so much...
Talk about blaming the victim.
I'm sure we'll see some media coverage soon. Right?
